The client and his wife loved to entertain. He had a natural gas grill piped from the house and grilled throughout the year. They played a lot of Bridge; in the winter around the kitchen island, in the summer in the back yard. The problem with the back yard was that it was 1. Small, and 2. Closely hemmed in by neighboring houses. During the hot and humid nights of summer, it became stifling. They wanted a ceiling fan. The problem was 1. No ceiling, and 2. No roof over the ceiling.
We built a framework from which to hang his windsurfing board, a bike rack and …… a roof-let for a ceiling fan. We wrapped the outer surface of the roof with a copper skin and added lighting at the corners that cast light over shoulders onto card hands, snacks and wine glasses. And it was very cool.
